Between the Lines: Double Dates
Boys and girls lacrosse both host JJ-CR; baseball gets two shots at title.
Good morning. 🥍⚾🥎⛳ It’s Friday, May 29. The 2025-26 academic year will conclude the same way it started in the fall, and continued in the winter: with multiple Garnet teams contending for section titles and state tournament berths.
The top-seeded boys and girls lacrosse teams both host No. 4 John Jay-Cross River on consecutive nights this week, with spots in their section title games on the line. Baseball has already secured its spot in the section championship, and even has some room for error Saturday.
Let’s look “Between the Lines” at Rye’s three remaining No. 1 seeds.

Baseball and Lacrosse Preview: Double Dates
Rye’s baseball team gets two shots to win Section 1. Because the Garnets have rolled through the double-elimination bracket unbeaten, they can claim the section title with a win Saturday against Mahopac. If they lose, they’ll get another crack at the Wolf Pac on Sunday at SUNY Purchase.
Last season, Rye was on the opposite end of the spectrum, needing to beat top-seeded Panas twice to win the section. The Garnets pulled it off, then advanced all the way to the Class A state semifinals. Now, they'll aim to prevent Mahopac from doing the same in the Class AA section bracket.
“We've been there before,” coach Mike Bruno said of the section championship. “The players know that it’s never over until that last out.”
That was made clear in Tuesday’s section semifinals, when the Garnets trailed by two runs in the bottom of the seventh, just two outs away from suffering their first playoff loss.
Facing an 0-2 count, senior Jamie Morris blasted a home run to center field, lifting Rye to a 4-3 walk-off win over No. 3 Yorktown.
“Just a great comeback win — a big hit by Jamie,” Bruno said. “We just tried to stay focused throughout the game. We always talk about grinding out at-bats … When he got that last at-bat, he had seen a lot of those pitches already, and he put a really good swing on it.”
A day after the loss to Rye, Yorktown was eliminated by Mahopac, which advanced to face Rye in the championship. In the teams’ regular-season meeting on May 2, Rye won 6-5. The Garnets trailed 5-2 before surging ahead with a four-run fifth inning.
Rye has won nine straight games for the second time this season. A 10th straight would be enough to claim a second consecutive section crown.
Girls lacrosse: The Garnets played the way a No. 1 seed should, beating No. 9 Pearl River 21-1 Tuesday to advance to the Class C section semifinals.
Rye scored three goals in the opening three minutes and led 10-0 before Pearl River finally scored its first – and only – goal of the game in the last second of the first quarter. The Garnet lead swelled to 14-1 at halftime and 19-1 entering the fourth quarter.
Rye will host No. 4 John Jay-Cross River in Friday’s semifinals, with hopes of playing for the championship June 2 at Nyack against either No. 2 Pelham or No. 3 Eastchester. The Garnets, who have won 11 of their last 12 games, didn’t play JJ-CR or Eastchester this year, but beat Pelham 15-7 way back in the March 23 season opener.
Boys lacrosse: In a carbon copy of a 17-2 regular-season win against Tappan Zee just 10 days ago, Rye defeated the Flying Dutchmen 17-2 once again Wednesday in the Section 1 Class C quarterfinals.
Junior Charlie Brady scored five goals to lead the Garnets. Senior teammates Henry Shoemaker and Carson Miller both logged hat tricks, with Shoemaker adding four assists.
With three straight wins, by a combined margin of 52-8, the Rye boys are playing their best lacrosse of the season at precisely the right time.
Like the girls team, Rye will host No. 4 seed John Jay-Cross River in the semifinals Saturday. In the April 16 regular-season matchup, Rye came out on top, 10-7. With a win, the Garnets would play No. 2 Somers or No. 3 Pelham in the section championship June 3 at Yorktown.

⛳ Congrats to Graham Erickson — winner of the Sportech Performer of the Week.
The sophomore finished fifth overall in the two-round Section 1 tournament, shooting a 78 Monday to punch his ticket to the New York state tournament.
The section’s top nine golfers will represent Section 1 at state, and one-third of them are from Rye. Sophomore Ryker Kevorkian shot 9-over to finish eighth, and junior Derek Bisceglia was 10-over, finishing ninth to earn a second consecutive state bid.
The trio will compete in the final tournament of the season June 7-8 at Mill Creek Golf Club in Churchville, N.Y.
The 73 Erickson shot in the first round last week helped the Garnet boys win their first section championship in 10 years, and only the fourth in the past 32 years.
