Good morning. 🏈⚽🏑🏐 It’s Friday, Sept. 11. Rye football’s 15-game win streak came to an end last night at Clarkstown South. Thursday night football is uncommon at the high school level. But it’s not as rare as seeing the Garnets on the losing end of a final score.
The 35-28 loss was Rye's first since the 2024 section championship game. It was also the team's first regular-season setback in nearly three years, a 23-game streak dating back to Sept. 22, 2023.
Rye’s hopes of a second consecutive undefeated season ended in its second week, but with six games still on the schedule, defense of section and state titles are still in play.
Let’s go “Between the Lines” to recap Thursday night’s stunner.

Gridiron Recap: End of a Streak
Even when Clarkstown South scored a go-ahead touchdown with five minutes remaining Thursday, there was still a belief Rye had the time and talent to pull off a late road comeback.
After all, another defending state champion, the Garnet girls soccer team, has already scored last-minute goals twice this year to remain undefeated. The 27-game unbeaten streak was in serious danger Saturday, then again on Wednesday. In recent years, teams across Rye’s athletic department have had a knack for pulling out wins, no matter how bleak things looked as the seconds ticked away.
But Thursday night, Rye football’s hopes of a sweet 16th-straight victory ended with a turnover on downs on its own 27.
The Vikings, who got four touchdowns from Landon Van Etten, were able to run out the final 1:50 after picking up a first down and forcing the Garnets to burn through their remaining timeouts.
After carrying the Garnet offense with five rushing scores in the season-opener, senior quarterback Charlie Brady helped match the Vikings’ firepower with four touchdowns through the air.
Rye led 14-13 at halftime after Brady threw a touchdown to sophomore Johnny Shoemaker with 1:46 left in the second quarter. The teams went back and forth for the entire second half, with tied scores at 21-21 and 28-28, before Van Etten punched in the game-winner with five minutes left.
Next up is a game Friday, Sept. 18, against Eastchester, a team Rye beat by 25 in the regular season and 14 in the playoffs a season ago.

Performer of the Week: Felix Wismer
⚽ Congrats to Felix Wismer — winner of the Sportech Performer of the Week.
The Rye boys used four-goal first-half flurries to beat both Harrison and Arlington 5-0 this week. In each of those surprisingly convincing outcomes, it was Wismer who opened the scoring.
Tuesday’s game against the Huskies was scoreless 10 minutes before halftime, then Wismer found the back of the net and the Garnets entered the break up 4-0.
Last night, against Class AAA contenders from Arlington, Wismer and sophomore James Hayashi each scored twice for another 4-0 halftime lead, on the way to a 3-0 record for the Garnets.
