Between the Lines: Fall Playoff Edition

Highly seeded Garnet teams closing in on section titles.

Good morning, subscribers. 🏈🎃 It’s Halloween — Friday, Oct. 31. If Section 1 was a neighborhood, Rye would be the house that hands out the good candy.

Boys soccer, girls soccer, and volleyball are racking up playoff wins on a nightly basis, confirming what we believed in the preseason and witnessed during the regular season: Rye athletics are truly the class of Section 1.

Not to mention football, which kicks off a playoff run of its own tonight with an 8-0 record and the No. 1 seed on the line.

Let’s go “Between the Lines” to look at the postseason paths for each team.

What better way to cap a perfect regular season than a rout in The Game? How about a section championship?

The Garnets beat Harrison 49-28 last Saturday to improve to 8-0, with five wins against teams that join them in the eight-team Section 1 tournament field. One of the two teams they haven’t played in the bracket is Brewster.

The Bears started the season 5-1, outscoring their first six opponents by a combined margin of 174-80. But the regular season ended with a 30-0 loss to Somers and a 36-34 defeat to Yorktown.

Those losses dropped the Bears to the No. 4 seed, with a first-round pairing against Rye. That’s not the place you want to be.

Rye begins its annual postseason run at 7 tonight in Nugent Stadium. With a win, another home game will follow next week against Eastchester or Yorktown — two teams the Garnets beat handily earlier this month.

As in most years, Rye and Somers are the tournament heavyweights.

The Garnets beat the Tuskers 17-7 on Sept. 12. Somers, the three-time defending state champions, started 2025 with an 0-2 record before winning six straight to close out the regular season. Meanwhile, Rye has scored 42-plus points each of the past five weeks.

Whichever team emerges from the section will immediately become the favorite to win the state tournament title as well.

Weather Report: The Weather Channel forecast for kickoff Friday night in Rye is 54 degrees with partly cloudy skies. 🌓

🏑 Junior forward Olivia Prata was the hero in Thursday’s 1-0 section semifinal win, scoring the lone goal in the final minutes of double overtime.

Rye has 10 shutout victories this season, but none were quite like this. After outscoring their previous five opponents by a combined margin of 23-0, the Garnets won by a single goal for the first time since Oct. 4, when they beat the same JJCR team 3-2.

The championship will be played Saturday at Lakeland, home of the 15-time defending section champions. But the Hornets aren’t the ones waiting for Rye in the title game. No. 3 seed Horace Greeley ended No. 2 seed Lakeland’s reign in Thursday’s other semifinal.

The Quakers (15-1-1) are the only team that’s beaten the Garnets (16-2) in their past 13 games.

Performer of the Week: Hannah Jachman

Congrats to Hannah Jachman — winner of the Sportech Performer of the Week.

Not only has Jachman accounted for five of Rye’s 11 postseason goals thus far, she’s opened the scoring in each of the team’s three section tournament wins.

The sophomore midfielder scored the Garnets’ lone first-half goal in their playoff-opener against Irvington, then added a second goal to make it 4-0. In the quarterfinals against Eastchester, she was on the receiving end of one of junior Shira Rand’s two corner-kick assists.

In Thursday’s semifinals at Tappan Zee, Jachman scored the first two goals to help the third-seeded Garnets knock off the second-seeded Dutchmen.

Next up is the matchup everyone’s been waiting for, as Rye (14-0-3) takes on Pleasantville (16-0) on Sunday morning. Neither team has lost this season, but only one can win the section title and move on to the state tournament.

⚽ Less than 48 hours after avenging their only loss of the season against Byram Hills, the top-seeded Rye boys won a tension-filled semifinal matchup 3-1 against No. 5 Panas on Wednesday.

Rye junior midfielder Kasen Scarperi scored less than five minutes into the game. Panas scored the equalizer 10 minutes into the second half, but the Garnets pulled away late with goals from juniors Peter Wilmot and Alec Dodge Terra.

The section title game, which kicks off at 7 p.m. Saturday at Lakeland, pits No. 1 Rye (15-1-3) against No. 2 Pleasantville (16-2-1) for the third time this season. The section championship appearance is Rye’s third straight, and fourth in the past six years.

🏐 The second-seeded Garnets kicked off the postseason Wednesday, sweeping Brewster at home for the second time this year. The team improved with every set of the 25-16, 25-14, 25-10 first-round win.

Continuing their season-long practice of shaking up the lineup, new and old faces contributed to the sweep — most notably Elena Lin (eight aces, six digs), who was called up from junior varsity just last week at the conclusion of its season.

As usual, junior setter Amelie Modesto successfully directed the offense up front, adding 25 assists, three kills, and four digs against Brewster. The team also got big contributions from senior veterans Valeria Medina (10 kills) and Phoebe Greto (eight), as well as newbie Audre Campbell (six).

Rye is now 7-0 at home, winning 21 of 22 sets this season, and retains home-court advantage all the way up until the section title game. The Garnets (15-4) host No. 7 Panas (13-5) at 2 p.m. Saturday.
