Between the Lines: Island Time
Rye battles Long Island champs in lacrosse semifinals.
Good morning. 🥍⚾⛳ It’s Friday, June 12. The school year is winding down. Seniors have already departed the high school’s hallways, and soon, Rye families will travel the globe on summer vacations.
But for Rye’s boys and girls lacrosse teams, it’s already island time. Both teams play Long Island regional champions this week in the Class C state semifinals, with the boys already winning last night to punch their ticket to the championship. The girls look to follow suit later today.
Long Island has a well-deserved reputation as New York’s lacrosse hotbed, but by the end of the weekend, Rye can claim two championships in the sport, bringing the school’s state title total to five in the 2025-26 academic year.
Let’s look “Between the Lines” at two lacrosse teams that are happy to put their summer break plans on hold.

Island Time for Rye Boys and Girls Lacrosse
In many ways, Rye’s boys and girls lacrosse teams are in the same boat. Both won Section 1 titles, then got off to slow starts in their respective regional championships before rolling to commanding wins.
In the Class C semifinals, the boys eliminated a top-ranked team from Long Island, earning the program’s first state championship appearance against Jamesville-DeWitt. If the Garnet girls can knock off an unbeaten Long Island opponent today, they, too, could play Jamesville in the title game.
Despite being the lower-ranked team in Thursday’s 1 vs. 2 semifinal matchup, the Garnet boys were in control for the entirety of their 10-8 win against Wantagh. Rye jumped out to a 4-1 lead, which grew to 10-5 in the game’s final 10 minutes.
The Warriors hadn’t lost a game since April 14, let alone been doubled up on the scoreboard. Henry Shoemaker had a hat trick for Rye, and fellow senior three-sport star Carson Miller scored two goals with two assists. Junior Charlie Brady and sophomore Will Niejadlik also had two-score games.
Rye will play for its first state championship at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at Hobart & William Smith Colleges in Geneva, N.Y. Jamesville, the Section 3 champions, outscored its first three state tournament opponents 60-12, posing a formidable final test for the Section 1 champion Garnets.

Girls lacrosse: Two years ago, Sayville beat the Garnets in the state title game to complete an undefeated championship season. This afternoon, the two teams will meet again, on the same SUNY Cortland field, and with similar stakes.
Sayville (19-0) is once again unbeaten, and Rye (16-4) has many college-bound upperclassmen who relish another opportunity to end the Golden Flashes’ dream season. The Section 1 and Section 11 champions begin play in the Class C semifinals at 2 p.m. today.
While Sayville is undefeated, the Garnets could not be hotter entering the matchup. After giving up a goal in the opening 10 seconds of the regional championship, Rye scored 20 straight times to beat Roundout Valley 20-1 on Sunday.
The gap in competitiveness between sections was clear, as the Garnets rolled past the Ganders (10-6), who were fresh off claiming the Section 9 title. By the end of the first quarter, a running clock went into effect as Rye took a 9-1 lead. At halftime, the lead was 15-1.
Sayville will present a significant step up in competition, but if Rye can hand the Golden Flashes their first loss, they’ll advance to the championship game at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, against either Jamesville or Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake.

Performers of the Week: Rye Golf’s All-State Trio

⛳ Congrats to Graham Erickson, Ryker Kevorkian, and Derek Bisceglia — winners of the Sportech Performer of the Week.
Rye was the only school to qualify three golfers for the 99-player field at the boys individual state championships, played June 7-8 at Mill Creek Golf Club in Churchville, N.Y.
But get this: all three Garnets – sophomore Graham Erickson (75-69, 6th), sophomore Ryker Kevorkian (71-74, T-7th), and junior Derek Bisceglia (74-73, T-14th) – earned all-state honors, awarded to the tournament’s top 20 finishers.
“In my 32 seasons coaching at Rye, I don’t think we’ve ever had a team this deep with so many young, talented players,” said Rye coach and local golf legend Pat Romano. “And we’ve never had three kids qualify for the state tournament, let alone finish with all-state honors. These guys don’t ever get flustered during a round.”
Erickson’s impressive 2-under 69 on the second day was among just a handful of rounds in the red. His sixth-place finish also earned him an invitation to play in this weekend’s boys high school Federation event at Bethpage Black. The 18-hole event pits the top six public school players in New York against the top six golfers from the Catholic Athletic Association, and the top six from New York’s independent high schools.
