Between the Lines: Leaving It on the Field
Four Rye fall sports teams raking in postseason wins.
Good morning, subscribers. 🏆 It’s Friday, Nov. 7. Two Rye teams have already won section titles. Two more hope to join them and give the Garnets four participants in New York’s Class A state tournaments.
Rye’s weekend of high-stakes playoff action kicks off with football’s section semifinal game at 6 tonight in Nugent Stadium.
Boys soccer, girls soccer, and volleyball will all play postseason games at the same time — 11 a.m. Saturday. When the powers-that-be drew up the brackets, they probably didn’t expect the same school to still be playing in all of them.
Let’s go “Between the Lines” to break down four Rye teams that are steamrolling toward titles.

Three teams join Rye in the section semifinals. The Garnets have already beaten all three this season. First up is the Eastchester Eagles, who lost to Rye 48-23 a month ago.
In the first meeting with Eastchester, Rye trailed by double digits for the only time this season. But after falling behind 10-0, Rye scored four touchdowns in 10 minutes to storm ahead by 18 and eventually win by 25. The final three quarters of the Oct. 10 rout showed what the Garnets are capable of, and they’ve maintained that standard ever since.
After last Friday’s 44-19 playoff-opening win against Brewster, the Garnets (9-0) have now scored 42-plus points in six straight games, with a +230 point differential this season, the best in all of Section 1.
Tonight’s game will be the last this season at Nugent Stadium, and the stakes escalate dramatically from here. With a win, Rye will play Somers (7-2) or Harrison (6-3) for the section title next Friday on a neutral field at Mahopac. Win there, and it’s onto the state tournament in Arlington.
None of the three potential section opponents in Rye’s path has lost a game since facing the Garnets. Eastchester has won three in a row, Somers has won seven straight after starting 0-2, and Harrison won last weekend’s playoff opener after falling to Rye in the teams’ regular-season finale.
Rye hasn’t lost to Eastchester since 2009. Barring a shocking outcome tonight, the next week will be filled with anticipation, either for a rematch against Rye’s fiercest rivals or for a chance to knock off the three-time defending state champion Tuskers.

Weather Report: The Weather Channel forecast for kickoff Friday night in Rye is 57 degrees with cloudy skies. ☁️

🏐 After falling behind 24-23, the Garnets won three straight points to complete a 25-21, 25-21, 26-24 sweep of Ardsley on Wednesday and advance to the first section championship appearance in coach Geri Jones’ Rye tenure.
The second-seeded Garnets (17-4) are 3-0 in the postseason and haven’t dropped a set. The team also completed an undefeated season on its home court, winning 27 of the 28 total sets played at Rye High School. The setting for the Garnets’ next match is Westchester County Center, with a section title on the line.
“This is definitely leaving a legacy for upcoming teams and I think we’re going to go so far,” said junior Amelie Modesto, who led Rye with 31 assists Wednesday. “I just believe in this team so much and we’ve already accomplished so much, I just can’t wait to see where we go.”
All that stands between Rye and a spot in the Class A state tournament is a match against fourth-seeded Tappan Zee (17-3) at 11 a.m. Saturday at Westchester County Center.

⚽ Congrats to Harkin Brown — winner of the Sportech Performer of the Week.
The freshman phenom scored all three of Rye’s goals in a 3-0 win Tuesday against Our Lady of Lourdes. With a 14th consecutive victory, the Garnets remain unbeaten at 18-0-3 and advance to the state quarterfinals.
After a scoreless first half, Brown’s first goal came on a cut-back and strong finish with 33 minutes remaining. Eight minutes later, Brown struck again after Lourdes could not clear the ball from just inside its own 18. The freshman’s hat trick was complete with 20 minutes left to play.
Knocking out the Section 9 champion Warriors means Rye’s next matchup will be Saturday against Sayville, the Section 11 champions from Long Island. It’s the third-straight appearance in the round of eight for the Garnets, who won the state championship in 2023 and lost in the semifinals in 2024.

⚽ With a 5-0 rout of New Paltz on Wednesday, the Garnets advanced to the Class A state quarterfinals with ease. Sophomore smooth operator Felix Wismer broke through for Rye’s first score with 21:48 to play in the first half. Four minutes later, junior Alec Dodge Terra polished off a corner kick by junior Kasen Scarperi to make it 2-0 Rye at the half.
In the second half, the Garnets took what little wind remained in the Huguenots’ sails, and kept it for themselves. Freshman Connor Dehmer scored an absolute rocket blast off a perfect pass from Wismer to make it 3-0 early in the second half. Dehmer later added a second goal, then Dodge Terra shocked the New Paltz goalie with a soaring free kick from about 40 yards out that landed in the back of the net.
To earn a spot in the state semifinals, the Garnets will need to beat John Glenn, the Section 11 champions who knocked off defending Class A state champion Floral Park Memorial 2-1 on Wednesday.
