Between the Lines: May Madness

Brackets take shape for Rye spring sports.

Good morning. 🥍⚾🥎⛳ It’s Friday, May 15. The spring sports postseason begins next week, and multiple Garnet teams have all but secured No. 1 seeds.

The path is already set for the defending section-champion Rye baseball team, which earned the top seed and a free pass to the Section 1 Class AA quarterfinals, where they’ll host No. 8 Eastchester or No. 9 Brewster on Tuesday.

Boys and girls lacrosse are both in position for No. 1 seeds as well. The boys hold the top spot in Section 1 Class C with two games remaining, and the girls are peaking at the right time after blowing out a one-loss Pleasantville team Thursday.

Meanwhile, softball is enjoying another May resurgence. The Garnets secured a playoff spot and rallied past Nyack on Thursday, the team’s fourth victory in its past six games.

Let’s look “Between the Lines” at the name nobody wants to see in their bracket: Rye.

Baseball Postseason Preview: May Madness

Win the league, beat Harrison, win the section. Those are the Garnet baseball team’s three main goals at the start of every season, and they checked two of those boxes off Tuesday, completing the sweep of the Huskies in their regular-season finale.

Now, Rye sets its sights on achieving the third and final goal in back-to-back seasons. The promotion to Class AA didn’t slow the Garnets, who earned the No. 1 seed and one of three byes into the section tournament quarterfinals.

With one win against Eastchester (9-11) or Brewster (7-12-1) on May 19, the Garnets will advance to the semifinals on May 22, when the tournament switches to double-elimination. Rye didn’t face Brewster this season, but beat Eastchester twice during its current six-game win streak.

After an 0-2 start, the Garnets went 15-3 the rest of the way, with the three losses coming in consecutive games in late April. The senior-laden roster may be the favorites to make the state tournament, building on last year’s run to the Class A state semifinals.

The regular season ended with a bang, as senior Nolan Hutson hit a two-run, seventh-inning home run Thursday to complete an 8-0 rout of Harrison.

The outcome was decided long before Hutson’s knockout punch. Rye’s first five batters got on base in the first inning, then junior Luke Ontaneda hit a triple to right field, driving in seniors Jamie Morris and Lucas London, and junior Charlie Rodilosso for a 3-0 lead.

That was all the scoring the Garnets needed, thanks to a combined shutout from sophomore pitchers Clayton McCarthy and Michael Bubeck. McCarthy didn’t allow a hit in four-plus innings, striking out seven Huskies. Bubeck got the final seven outs of the game for the save.

“It was great to sweep Harrison, our rival,” said Rye coach Mike Bruno. “Especially to get the win today, we clinch a share of the league title with Clarkstown North.”

With one championship secured, the Garnets have a favorable path to pursue more postseason hardware.

Performer of the Week: Beau Whaling

🥍 Congrats to Beau Whaling — winner of the Sportech Performer of the Week.

Rye’s girls lacrosse team had no shortage of scorers in a 21-6 statement win Thursday at Pleasantville, but it was Whaling that put up the most impressive total, with five goals.

The Section 1 Class D-leading Panthers entered the week with a 13-0 record before back-to-back losses to Yorktown and Rye. The Garnets scored 18 seconds into the game and led 9-2 by the end of the first quarter. Pleasantville trailed 13-5 at halftime, then only managed to score once the rest of the way.

In addition to Whaling’s scoring, she also dominated in draws, keeping the Garnets on the attack for most of the game.

🥎 Rye’s softball team trailed by four runs in the fifth before battling back to tie the score in the bottom of the inning. In the sixth, the offense kept rolling for an 8-5 win, the third victory in the Garnets’ past four games.

Six straight hitters for Rye (6-11) reached base in the fifth, with juniors Penelope Gilmore, Reese McGill, and Caroline Joyce each driving in one run to tie the score at 5-5.

In the sixth, sophomores Olivia Hodes and Emma Stark both singled, and Gilmore doubled to score them both. Gilmore, who also pitched a complete game with five strikeouts and five earned runs, advanced to third base on a wild pitch. McGill then drove her in for Rye’s eighth and final run.

The regular season concludes Saturday against Clarkstown North (7-12), then Rye’s playoff path will be revealed.
