Between the Lines: No Half Measures
Midway through season, Rye teams go all in
Good morning, subscribers. It’s Friday, Oct. 3, the halfway point of the fall sports season.
Rye football remains undefeated going into Saturday’s playoff rematch with Yorktown, and they aren’t the only Garnet squad without a loss. The girls soccer team is also unbeaten.
Meanwhile, volleyball hasn’t dropped a set at home and has won eight straight matches. Field hockey has won five in a row, including a defeat of powerhouse Lakeland. Boys soccer is riding a six-game unbeaten streak.
As we said at the start of the season, expectations are high for Rye sports across the board.
This edition of “Between the Lines” looks at how all the pieces are falling into place.

Gridiron Preview: No Half Measures

The wins record Dino Garr set last Friday is even more impressive when you consider just how quickly the high school football season comes and goes. Eight games a year are all that are guaranteed.
The 42-28 win against Clarkstown North was the 365th in Garr’s career, and also marked the halfway point of the 2025 regular season. The four-game home stretch for the Garnets (4-0) begins with Yorktown, the team they eliminated in last year’s section semifinals. Kickoff is 6 p.m. Saturday in Nugent Stadium.
The Huskers, who have finished with a winning record every year since 2018, dug themselves a hole with a 1-3 start this season. After three double-digit losses, Yorktown picked up its first win at Lakeland last Friday.
Garr’s historic milestone may have been the biggest cause for celebration last Friday, but it shouldn’t be lost how the Garnets dispatched a previously unbeaten Clarkstown North team. Rye led 35-12 before the Rams scored two quick touchdowns, with an onside kick recovery in between, to get back within seven late in the game.
With the wins record behind them and a month until the postseason, the Garnets can settle in for a pressure-free stretch. Not that they’ve looked uptight in the slightest. The scoring margin through four games is a whopping +95.
It could be significantly higher following a mismatch against a Yorktown team dealing with uncharacteristic struggles.
Weather Report: The Weather Channel forecast for Saturday night in Rye is 78 degrees at kickoff with partly cloudy skies. 🌤️

🏐 Congrats to Amelie Modesto — winner of the Sportech Performer of the Week.
The Rye junior continues to set her team up for success during their current eight-match win streak. Modesto recorded 34 assists in a 3-1 win last Friday at Ossining before helping the Garnets sweep their first two home matches.
In the home opener against Brewster on Saturday, Modesto had 21 assists. On Tuesday, she added 26 assists against Ardsley, drawing praise from both teams’ coaches, along with senior libero Emma Lunstead, who had 27 digs.
“There was a guy here who teaches at Ardsley, but I used to coach with him at Mamaroneck,” said Rye coach Geri Jones. “He came over and he said, ‘Man, your libero and your setter are special.’ I said, ‘Yes, they are.’”

Game of the Week: Lakeland Runs Dry 🚱

🏑 After the final seconds ticked down on Rye’s 2-1 win against Lakeland, all of the Garnets on the field and bench ran straight to senior goalie Chloe Holden in a huddle of celebration.
The victory was the Garnets’ first in a decade against the Hornets, who have won 15 straight Section 1 championships and ended Rye’s season in the section semifinals a year ago. It was especially sweet for first-year Rye coach Valerie Perkins, who was facing her alma mater and former high school coach for the first time.
“Lakeland is such a great, strong team,” Perkins said. “Especially me coming from Lakeland, playing my old coach – her teaching me everything that I know. Such a full circle moment.”
The win was the biggest statement of the season thus far for Rye (8-1). Even when the Garnets trailed 1-0 after the first half, their mentality and will to win didn’t waver. Senior captains Beau Whaling and Sienna Myers scored in the third quarter to claim a one-goal lead, and Holden made 13 saves against Lakeland’s talented top lines.
