Between the Lines: Senior Sendoff
Rye football (6-0) hosts Nyack (2-4) in home finale.
Good morning, subscribers. 🏈 It’s Friday, Oct. 17. The Rye football team has scored 40-plus points four times this season. Their next opponent, Nyack, has allowed 40-plus in three of its past four games. Tonight, an unstoppable force meets a movable object.
Rye (6-0) kicks off against Nyack (2-4) at 7 p.m. in Nugent Stadium. It’s the final regular-season home game for a senior class that’s gone 37-5 thus far in their four years suiting up for the Garnets.
Let’s go “Between the Lines” for a look at what’s in store on Senior Night.

After trailing by 10 in the second quarter last Friday, Rye dominated in all three phases to win 48-23 and improve to 6-0.
This senior class — like most Garnet senior classes before them — are perennial playoff contenders, but the 2025 team has won in an unusually explosive fashion. Carson Miller threw six touchdown passes last week for the Garnets, who also recovered an onside kick and returned an interception for a score.
It’s the first time since 2015 the Garnets started 6-0 in back-to-back seasons and the first time since 2016 they scored 40-plus points in three straight games. Meanwhile, Nyack’s defense has made a habit of allowing 40-plus. That combination suggests the trend will continue for both teams tonight as Rye continues its pursuit of an undefeated season.
Rye beat Nyack 39-13 last year, a team that hasn’t had a winning record since going 2-0 in the Covid-shortened season of 2020. The Red Hawks are 5-17 against the Garnets all-time.
Rye’s 2005 state championship team will be recognized on the field during the coin toss and at halftime. Twenty years later, the 2025 Garnets are on a mission to replicate their feat.
After tonight’s game, the regular season concludes with The Game on Oct. 25 at Harrison.
Weather Report: The Weather Channel forecast for Friday night in Rye is 55 degrees at kickoff with mostly clear skies. 🌘

Performer of the Week: Henry Shoemaker 👞

🏈 Congrats to Henry Shoemaker — winner of the Sportech Performer of the Week.
Two touchdown catches and 145 receiving yards were enough to make last Friday’s game notable for the Rye senior captain. But the wide receiver also made an impact on defense and special teams as well.
After scoring on offense to give Rye its first lead, Shoemaker returned an interception for a touchdown and successfully kicked the extra point. Then, his ensuing squib kickoff bounced off the rear of an Eastchester special-teamer, which ended up in the hands of the Garnets again.
“Last week, we saw Jagger (Fenton’s) punt return before a touchdown that really brought us back, and this week it was Shoe’s pick-six,” said senior teammate Carson Miller. “I’m not sure if that onside kick was intentional, but we got the ball back and that’s what we needed.”
Rye turned the kickoff recovery into another touchdown, a key sequence that led to a 25-point win.

Game of the Week: League Title Locked Up🔒

🏑 In a week of blowouts for Rye’s various teams, field hockey’s 9-0 win Wednesday against Byram Hills was one of the largest. While the game wasn’t close, it was note-worthy for several reasons.
The nine goals were the most all season for a 12-2 Garnet squad that hasn’t had issues finding the back of the net. They had a 25-0 shot advantage over the Bobcats and clinched a third league title in five years.
Senior Beau Whaling recorded a hat trick, senior Issy Mann scored twice, and four other players added goals: seniors Thea Fairhurst, Maggie Swanson, and Jules Karmilowicz, and sophomore Kaitlyn Coyne.
The Garnets have won nine of their past 10, with two games remaining before the postseason begins.
