Between the Lines: Shining on the Diamond

Rye baseball, softball notch big wins.

Good morning. 🥍⚾🥎 It’s Friday, April 24. Last week, we asked if something in the water led to Rye sports’ success. For the Garnet baseball team, it may be time to examine the Florida swamplands.

Last year, the team headed to Florida with a 4-3 record, then won 15 in a row. This year, the team lost its first game in Florida to fall to 0-2, then won nine straight.

Let’s look at the makings of another magical season in this edition of “Between the Lines.”

The Garnet baseball team scored 16 runs in a two-game sweep of Clarkstown North this week, pushing its win streak to nine before a 5-3 loss to Fox Lane on Thursday.

The most dramatic finish of the team’s latest Florida-born win streak was a come-from-behind, 5-4 walk-off victory on Monday.

Down to their final out, and trailing by a run in the bottom of the seventh, senior catcher Jackson Pineault hit a two-run, walk-off home run to give the Garnets the win.

Senior Jamie Morris reached base on an error by the Rams’ first baseman, then Pineault ended the game on a deep drive to right field.

Rye (9-3) got the scoring started early, when senior leadoff hitter Nolan Hutson tripled to centerfield in the first inning. Morris, the No. 2 batter, drove him in with a double to make it 1-0.

Clarkstown North (5-6-1) evened the score in the third, then took a 2-1 lead in the fifth. Hutson again provided a spark with a leadoff double, and junior Luke Ontaneda tied the game on a ground-ball single into right field.

After the Rams took a 4-2 lead in the sixth, junior Ben Fineberg doubled for Rye, then advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a sac fly by junior Michael Bubeck, cutting the deficit to one run.

In the bottom of the seventh, Rye had a pop out and a strikeout, with Morris getting on base in between. Before facing Pineault, the Rams’ pitcher attempted to end the game with a pick off at first, but Morris got back to first base safely. Pineault sent the first pitch he saw over the fence, and the Garnet bench rushed the field in celebration.

A day later, the Garnets completed a sweep of the Rams with an 11-0 victory on the road. Rye scored once in the third and fourth innings, then exploded for nine runs in the fifth, forcing another game to a sudden end, this time in a run rule.

🥎 Congrats to Caroline Joyce — winner of the Sportech Performer of the Week.

In one of the most dominant performances of the year for Rye sports, the Garnet softball team beat Pelham 19-0 on Thursday.

Rye (2-4) scored all of its runs in the first three innings before the game ended on a run rule in the fifth. Both of the Garnets’ wins this season have come against the hapless Pelicans.

Junior Caroline Joyce went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Juniors Penelope Gilmore, Reese McGill, Clara Meszkat, and sophomore Olivia Hodes also logged multi-hit games.

Eighth-grader Georgina Gilmore pitched a shutout to earn the win, striking out five batters in seven innings.

Rye looks to win consecutive games for the first time this season, when the team travels to Mahopac for a game at 11 a.m. Saturday.
