Between the Lines: Spring Forward
Next Garnet sports season starts now.
Good morning. 🏀🥍⚾🥎 It’s Friday, March 27. Yesterday’s sudden shift in the weather mirrors Rye High School’s transition from winter to spring sports.
One day, there are still rogue clumps of snow on the ground. The next, it’s 70 degrees and sunny.
The Garnet hockey and boys basketball teams just finished competing for state titles. Today, baseball season begins, and tomorrow, boys lacrosse plays its first game.
When you win as often as Rye does, there’s no time for a gradual change in seasons.
Let’s go “Between the Lines” for an early look at spring’s budding success stories.

Rye Sports Spring Forward
In the fall, Carson Miller and Henry Shoemaker won a state football title, then tipped off basketball season just a few days later. The senior duo’s shift to spring will be just as rapid.
After leading the hoops team to the Class AA state semifinals last weekend, the triple-sport stars take the field in lacrosse tomorrow, alongside basketball teammates Tucker Hess and Luke and Sam Scully.
There will be no easing into the season. The opener is a rematch of last season’s section championship, which Somers won on the way to claiming the Class B state lacrosse title.
Miller and Shoemaker returned the favor, ending the Tuskers’ football season in the section championship last November. But the Harvard-bound best friends will still be out to avenge last year’s painful lacrosse loss and finish their stellar senior campaign with three section titles in three sports.
“It’s going to be quite some time before a pair of kids like Henry Shoemaker and Carson Miller pass through the town of Rye again,” said Tom Proudian, head coach of the boys basketball team and defensive coordinator on the football team. “They are two truly special kids.”

Also taking the lacrosse field are hockey stars Colin Nigro and twins Max and Will Niejadlik. The sophomore trio helped the Garnets claim their first state championship on the ice March 15. For an encore, they’ll look to lift Rye to its fifth lacrosse section title in the past six years.
Another standout on the Garnets’ championship hockey team will trade in his stick for a bat this week. Jamie Morris, a senior hockey captain, leads Rye baseball into today’s season opener at Tappan Zee.
No Rye team had more success last spring than baseball. The Garnets won the section and advanced all the way to the state semifinals with a record of 23-5. After a 4-3 start, the team won 15 straight games, a streak that began during the annual trip to Florida.
The Garnets will look to recapture that magic early this year. After playing Tappan Zee today, the team will return to ESPN’s Wide World of Sports complex for games Monday and Wednesday in Orlando.
For most students, spring break is a time for relaxation, but as the Garnets have shown season after season, there’s no rest for the winners.

🏀 Congrats to the Rye boys basketball team — winners of the Sportech Performer of the Week.
After a lights-out playoff run, Rye’s season came to an end in a 63-54 Class AA state semifinal loss to Amsterdam.
It was not Rye’s day, but it was an unforgettable season.
Rye (21-6) was ahead 9-8 after one period, but the lead was gone midway through the second quarter, and sadly, never returned.
“This season was a tremendously satisfying and gratifying journey for this team,” Proudian said. “We really got the most out of ourselves and went on a terrific run in the postseason. This whole thing could have ended a long time ago at several points, but these kids just kept playing and winning. What a group of kids this is.”
The Garnets entered the postseason as the No. 5 seed in the section, before rattling off six straight playoff wins to claim Section 1 and regional championships. The team played its best basketball of the season over the past couple of weeks, eliminating five teams in a row with better records before coming up short against the Rams (23-3), who finished as state runner-up.
