Between the Lines: Spring Forward

Girls lacrosse among Garnet teams seeking strong finish.

Good morning. 🥍⚾🥎⛳ It’s Friday, May 8. Like last season, the Rye girls lacrosse team is right in the thick of the section championship race.

That fact was just as evident in the Garnets’ latest loss as it was during the dominant, six-game win streak that preceded it. The narrow setback, a 13-12 overtime loss to Nyack on Tuesday, may sound familiar to close followers of the team; Rye lost to Nyack by the same score in the section title game a year ago.

However, the RedHawks and Garnets are now in separate classes, which means both could win section championships (and beyond) without one ending the other’s season in a playoff heartbreaker.

Let’s look “Between the Lines” at the final stretch of the spring sports regular season.

The spring season is in full force, but Rye’s girls lacrosse team has been putting football numbers up on the Nugent Stadium scoreboard.

A day after shutting out Scarsdale, 17-0, the Garnets (8-4) beat Briarcliff by a two-touchdown margin, 15-1. On Saturday, they picked up their first win against an out-of-state opponent, routing New Canaan (Conn.), 16-3.

“We have tremendous depth and talent on our team, and have been able to showcase that in our dominant wins this week,” said Rye coach Michelle Mason.

Although the Garnets’ six-game win streak came to an end Tuesday against Nyack, 13-12 in overtime, the team’s resilience was still on display. Rye tied the game with 4:07 left in regulation, then remained on the attack until the final whistle. A potential game-winner sailed just over the goal with 1.5 seconds left, sending the game to overtime.

Nyack (6-3) ended it just 26 seconds into the extra period, repeating the result of the 2025 Section 1 Class C championship game, which the RedHawks won to carry their undefeated season into the state tournament.

Unlike last season, the two teams won’t meet again in the playoffs. Nyack moved up to Class B, where it’s currently in position for the No. 1 seed. Meanwhile, Rye remains in the top spot of the Class C standings.

The final four games of the regular season will further prepare the Garnets for the playoffs. Two are against Connecticut teams, Ridgefield and Greenwich. The others are against Pleasantville (13-0) — which passed Briarcliff for the Class D lead after the Bears lost to Rye — and Ursuline (6-6), the last challenger standing in the way of Rye’s unbeaten record in league play.

Performer of the Week: Penelope Gilmore

🥎 Congrats to Penelope Gilmore — winner of the Sportech Performer of the Week.

Gilmore’s performance pitching and at the plate helped Rye softball double up Rye Neck in a 12-6 road win Tuesday.

The junior threw a complete game, allowing four earned runs and striking out five to earn the win. On offense, she went 2-for-3 with a double, triple, and three runs scored.

Her younger sister, eighth-grader Gigi Gilmore, had a three-run triple, and senior Charlotte Dinger drove in two runs with a double. Sophomore Sophiah Collins also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs.

Rye (5-11) is once again playing its best softball in May, adding an 8-4 win Thursday against Nanuet, the team’s third victory in the past week.

⛳ Rye’s girls golfers claimed a second-straight league title Monday, beating Harrison 249-272 to secure a spot in the section tournament later this month.

Sophomore Leila Kubursi had the low score of the day with a 44, followed by senior Anna Bancroft and sophomore Elle Ridley, who both shot a 49.

The Garnets (9-2) have hopes of a strong postseason showing, especially after defeating defending state champion Ursuline last week. The Koalas had the match’s two lowest scorers, but Rye had a better showing top to bottom, winning 237-242.

Bancroft and sophomore Sophie Ehrlich both shot a 48 to lead Rye, with senior Tori Hobbins one stroke behind.
