Between the Lines: Spring Playoff Preview

Baseball, lacrosse teams seeded No. 1 in section.

Good morning. 🥍⚾🥎⛳ It’s Friday, May 22. Boys golf has already secured one section championship for Rye this spring, and several other Garnet teams are favored to follow suit.

Baseball, boys lacrosse, and girls lacrosse all earned No. 1 seeds. Softball, seeded 14th, and boys tennis, seeded 11th, enter the playoffs performing better than they have all year, and could give opponents a postseason surprise.

This edition of “Between the Lines” breaks down the brackets that await Rye’s many section title contenders.

In last year’s section tournament, Rye baseball was on the brink of elimination, needing two wins in one day against top-seeded Panas to claim the Section 1 Class A crown. The Garnets pulled it off, thanks to a no-hitter by then-senior Peter Davies. Once they did, they rolled all the way to the state semifinals.

This year’s baseball team hopes for the same end result, but preferably without the need for dramatics. Now playing in Class AA, it’s the Garnets who are the No. 1 seed, and the result of their postseason opener was never in question.

Sophomore starting pitcher Clayton McCarthy, who played a large part in last year’s run to state, pitched a complete game shutout and struck out nine Eastchester batters in a 4-0 section quarterfinal win Tuesday.

The tournament now moves to a double-elimination format. The Garnets (16-5) host No. 4 Horace Greeley in the semifinals tonight, then will advance to either the winner’s or loser’s bracket next Tuesday against No. 2 Mahopac or No. 3 Yorktown.

Rye didn’t play Greeley this year, but won 11-3 at Yorktown on April 8, and beat Mahopac 6-5 on May 2.

Boys lacrosse: As the No. 1 seed in the Section 1 Class C bracket, Rye can rest up over Memorial Day weekend until the section quarterfinals on Wednesday, putting the Garnets in prime position to claim their fifth section title in six years.

In the regular-season finale Monday, the Garnets (11-5) easily defeated Tappan Zee, 17-2. There’s a chance the Flying Dutchmen, who sit eighth in the standings with an 8-7 record, could be Rye’s opening playoff opponent. Rye will learn its playoff opponent tonight, when Tappan Zee plays a combined Briarcliff/Croton Harmon team.

Rye, which went 9-1 against Section 1 competition this year, is looking to reclaim the section crown after its four-year streak as champions came up one game short in 2025.

Girls lacrosse: Like the boys, the Garnet girls (12-4) are the top seed in the Class C bracket, securing their spot on the top line after blasting Pleasantville 21-6 and Greenwich 21-8.

Rye’s early-season setbacks against top out-of-state competition are now serving their purpose. After starting the year 2-3, the Garnets won 10 of their final 11 games.

Rye, which lost the section title game by one goal a year ago, has a roster that’s experienced championships in the past, and aims to do so again. The Garnets host Byram Hills or Pearl River in the section quarterfinals Tuesday. With a win, they’ll advance to the semifinals next Friday.

Softball: Rye beat Clarkstown North 7-6 Saturday for a fourth win in its final five games. The team’s 5-3 record in May is a vast improvement after a 2-9 start, catapulting the Garnets from outside the playoff bubble to the No. 14 seed and safely in.

The path won’t be easy, as Rye opens on the road Friday at No. 3 Yorktown. With a win, they would play No. 6 Lakeland or No. 11 Roosevelt in the section quarterfinals.

Rye’s run to the playoffs follows a script that’s similar to a year ago, when the team started 0-7, then went 7-4-1 in May to make the postseason as the No. 10 seed and win a game to reach the quarterfinals.

Boys tennis: The senior doubles duo of Filip Glitterstam and Lou Kim-Reuter advanced to the semifinals of the Section 1 tournament before falling to the defending state champions, Chris Cho and Pratik Nayak of Clarkstown South, on Thursday night.

The Garnets’ top doubles team earned all-section honors, along with senior Luke Gordon, who reached the quarterfinals of the singles bracket.

If the individual results are any indication, the Garnets (11-4) have a good shot at competing for the Section 1 title when team tournament play opens Saturday. Rye was one of four schools in all of Section 1 to send multiple singles players into the round of 16, and had three doubles teams make the round of 16, tied for the most with Scarsdale.

⛳ Congrats to the Rye boys golf team — winners of the Sportech Performer of the Week.

Rye boys golf won its first Section 1 team championship in 10 years Monday, using a mix of low scores and depth that was a theme all season.

Sophomore Graham Erickson shot a 73, currently sitting at No. 2 on the individual leaderboard. He and four other Garnets made the cut and will continue playing in the second round next Tuesday, which will determine the section’s individual champions.

Joining Erickson in the final round at Centennial Golf Club in Carmel will be freshman Charlie Molloy, who shot a 77, sophomore Ryker Kevorkian (80), junior Derek Bisceglia (81), and sophomore Ryan Mascali (83). Sophomore Evan Dolan also contributed to Rye’s section-winning team score with an 89.

Romano said the team championship was Rye’s first since 2016 and the fourth in the past 32 years.
