Between the Lines: The Florida Project

Garnets' spring trips are far from a break.

Good morning. 🥍⚾🥎 It’s Friday, April 3. Most of the Rye community ventured to warm-weather locales for the past week, and the Garnets’ sports teams were no exception.

Baseball, softball, and girls lacrosse all spent spring break in Florida. Boys lacrosse stayed put in New York, but scheduled some of the state’s top competition from Long Island.

The blueprint is similar to what worked for Rye’s state championship hockey team: face the best of the best, even if it means suffering an early-season loss or two, so that when the playoffs roll around, you’re battle-tested.

Let’s look “Between the Lines” at the Garnet teams that crossed state lines.

In Florida, high school sports are just different. The year-round warm weather provides a massive advantage, allowing teams to practice and play outdoors, regardless of the season.

Just look at American Heritage, the Delray Beach school that Rye’s girls lacrosse team faced Wednesday. It was the Garnets’ third game of the season, but the Stallions opened their schedule way back on Feb. 11, already amassing an impressive 14-1 record.

While American Heritage is one of Florida’s top programs, claiming state championships in 2021, 2023, and 2024, Rye held its own before falling 11-8. The three-goal margin made it one of the closest contests of the season for the Stallions, who won their previous two games 20-4 and 15-2.

In the spirit of learning from the best while in Florida, the Garnets also had a training session with Sydni Black, a former All-American from Loyola University Maryland, who was the 2024 NCAA Woman of the Year and now plays professionally in the Women’s Lacrosse League.

Like all Rye teams, when the Garnets return to New York, they’ll set their sights on a section title after losing to undefeated Nyack in the Section 1 championship a season ago. Despite Wednesday’s loss, the season is off to a solid start.

In the season-opener, Rye beat Pelham 15-7, scoring the game’s final seven goals to turn a one-point lead into a rout. Last Friday, the Garnets won 16-7 at Bronxville, outscoring the Broncos by five in the fourth quarter.

Next up is a home game at 5 p.m. Tuesday against Wilton, another strong lacrosse program, which lost in double overtime of the Connecticut state semifinals a season ago.

Baseball: In between six scrimmages in a four-day span, the Rye baseball team squeezed in two games against New York opponents, going 1-1 during the annual spring training trip to ESPN’s Wide World of Sports complex in Orlando.

In a battle of defending Section 1 champions, the Garnets took a sixth-inning lead against Class AAA Ketcham before falling 10-7 on Monday. Early Tuesday morning, Rye was ready for action, scoring 12 runs in the first two innings of a 17-9 win against Pelham.

Against Ketcham, junior Luke Ontaneda went 3-for-4 with three RBIs. The Storm scored five runs in the first two innings before Rye battled back for a 7-5 lead. Ketcham reclaimed the lead with a four-run sixth inning to win the season opener.

Against Pelham, four seniors had multi-hit games: Lucas London with three, and Nolan Hutson, Harry Ellis, and Jamie Morris with two apiece. Rye scored five runs in the first inning, then added seven more in the second for a 12-5 advantage. The Garnets added two more runs in the sixth and seventh innings, going ahead 17-7, before Pelham scored a pair in the bottom of the seventh.

Softball: The Garnet girls opened their season with six exhibitions in Orlando. Rye played Rogers (Minn.) three times — a team that won a state championship in 2024 and finished as state runner-up in 2025 — along with two exhibitions against Edgewood (Ohio) and one against Jordan (Minn.), which won a 2025 state title.

After five losses in Florida, Rye finished off the trip with a 7-7 tie against Edgewood on Thursday. The regular season begins with a tough test Tuesday at Harrison, a team that went 20-3 and lost by one run in the 2025 section championship.

After three straight road games, Rye’s schedule will include an even mix of home and away dates. That will be a welcome change from last season, when Rye started 0-7 while waiting for the completion of its new softball facility. The Garnets came on strong last May, going 7-4-1 to qualify for the postseason and win a playoff game.

Performer of the Week: Jeremy Guski đź“‹

🥍 Congrats to Jeremy Guski — winner of the Sportech Performer of the Week.

The new boys lacrosse coach won his Garnets’ debut 12-5 Saturday against Somers. Rye was in control from start to finish, leading 5-2 at halftime and 9-4 entering the fourth quarter.

It was a strong start to Guski’s tenure, who took over a team that lost in the section championship last season. The Mahopac High School graduate played lacrosse at UMass, and was the associate head coach of the boys lacrosse team at Yorktown High School before coming to Rye.

Charlie Brady led the Garnets with four goals and an assist, and fellow junior Henry Gilroy added three goals and an assist.

Despite a loss in their second game, the Garnets still proved they’ll contend for section and state titles, falling 12-11 Wednesday against Cold Spring Harbor, the defending Section 8 champion and Class D state semifinalist.

Rye has a week off before hosting another Long Island lacrosse power, Garden City, at 5 p.m. April 8 in Nugent Stadium.
