Rye Boys Hoops, Hockey Both Advance Saturday

Ten days before St. Patrick’s Day, luck ran out for the Little Irish.
The Rye hockey team beat Aquinas 4-1 on the road Saturday to advance to the New York state semifinals. The Garnets, runners-up of Section 1, took a 3-0 lead entering the final period.
After eliminating the Section 5 champions, Rye will play Clarence, the winner of Section 4, in the state semifinals at 4:30 p.m. March 14 in Buffalo. The Garnets beat the Red Devils 4-3 in their season-opener on Dec. 5.

Meanwhile, at Westchester County Center, the Rye boys basketball team captured the Section 1 championship, with a 57-50 win over Clarkstown North on Saturday night. The Garnets trailed by a point with six minutes to go before pulling away down the stretch.
Rye will face Section 9 champion Goshen Central in the state tournament’s opening round at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Yorktown.
