Breaking: Garnets fall in Section 1 finals

Somers' fourth quarter surge puts game on ice

Quarterback Carson Miller scrambles on Friday night against Somers. The Garnets jumped out to a 14-7 halftime lead, but fell apart in a forgettable fourth quarter.

Rye’s 420-day undefeated streak came to a crashing halt Friday as Somers dealt the Garnets a stinging 35-21 loss in the first-ever Section 1 championship that pitted two defending state champs against one another.

The Tuskers overcame a 14-7 halftime deficit, scoring 28 unanswered points in the second half. With the game knotted at 14-14 and 10 minutes left in regulation, the Garnets turned the ball over twice on key possessions in a disastrous fourth quarter.
