Rye’s boys basketball team beat Smithtown West 51-47 on Friday in Yorktown, overcoming three quarters of cold shooting with a blistering finish.
The Garnets (21-5) were trailing 37-30 entering the final quarter, then outscored Long Island’s Section 11 champions 21-10 down the stretch to win in the regional final.
Senior Carson Miller led Rye with 18 points, and teammate Henry Shoemaker added 13. The Bulls (22-2), who averaged 78 points this season, were held more than 30 points below that mark.

Rye is the second team to punch its ticket to next weekend’s Class AA state semifinals in Binghamton. The Section 1 champion Garnets will face either Amsterdam, from District 2, or Nottingham, from District 3.
Rye’s semifinal game will tip off at 11:45 a.m. March 20 in Binghamton’s Visions Veterans Memorial Arena. The championship game is 6 p.m. March 21.
The Garnets have now won six straight playoff games, and 12 of their past 13 games overall. For the second time in the past four games, Rye eliminated a team that had just one loss all season: Suffern, the top-seeded team in Section 1, and now Smithtown West, which entered Friday on a 20-game win streak.
