Byram Hills upset top-seeded Rye 3-2 in overtime Sunday at Brewster Ice Arena, ending the Garnets’ bid at defending their section title. However, Rye’s season isn’t over just yet.

The Garnets’ seven-game win streak was snapped, but by making the Section 1 title game, they earned an at-large bid to the New York state quarterfinals.

Rye (16-3-3) will face the Section 5 champions on Saturday, while Byram Hills (13-5-1) moves on to face the Section 2 champions. Section 1 is the only region to receive two bids in the state tournament’s eight-team bracket.

Rye and Byram Hills, the tournament’s No. 3 seed, played a scoreless first period, and the score remained even at 2-2 after regulation. The Bobcats scored the winner in overtime to deny Rye its 16th section title.

Still, the Garnets are now just three wins away from claiming a state championship. Next up is the Division 2 quarterfinals, where they lost to eventual state runner-up Ogdensburg a year ago.
