Train station cafe gets OK to reopen

All aboard. White and gold balloons, free ice coffees, and enthusiastic hellos greeted customers at the train station on Monday when Winfield Street Coffee got back to business after 35 days of battling with its landlord, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
The MTA ordered Winfield to shut down on Aug. 18, about six weeks after the Rye location had opened, after inspectors found a small range and fryer in its kitchen that had not been officially permitted.
Winfield owner Breno Donatti offered to remove that equipment immediately so he could continue operating, but the MTA rejected that proposed quick fix. Winfield was closed for nearly five weeks before the MTA renewed the café’s certificate of occupancy in writing on Monday.
In the interim, Donatti removed the unapproved equipment and installed an exhaust hood above its permitted oven.

The arbitration panel working to mediate the last remnants of Westchester’s messy Playland divorce from Standard Amusements has ruled that the ex-operator defaulted on its contract and is not entitled to the $57 million in damages it sought – but the split could still cost the county millions.
The county and Standard entered into arbitration this summer over which party was responsible for the collapse of their 30-year Playland management contract, which Standard announced it was exiting earlier this year.
Standard claimed the county hadn’t made promised infrastructure upgrades at the waterfront amusement park

Dogs in Rye Town Park have a lot to bark about.
Following months of debate, the Rye City Council voted unanimously to extend off-leash dog hours at the park by an additional hour during the off-season.
Council members had hesitated to expand off-leash hours to 10 a.m. because of concerns over enforcement and safety, but ultimately agreed to the extension after hearing from residents who praised the dog-loving community built around the park’s friendly confines.

Less than 24 hours after Rye resident Pam Kerlan realized she had lost her engagement ring, it was back on her finger — thanks to the Rye Moms Facebook group.
Kerlan was at home preparing dinner over Labor Day weekend when she took off her rings and stored them in her pocket to marinate chicken. That moment had slipped her mind when she then took a long walk to the beach with her husband.
Several hours after they had returned home, Kerlan realized her pockets were empty and her engagement ring was missing.
