On The Record: Paying it Forward

Ex-Garnets star hasn't forgotten his roots

Garnet gives back. If Rye baseball coach Mike Bruno ever wants to remind his team hard work pays off, he doesn’t have to look far for an example.

It wasn’t long ago that George Kirby, now a star pitcher for the Seattle Mariners, was in their shoes.

The 2016 Rye baseball alumnus was a three-time all-state selection before going on to excel in college and the minors. Since making his MLB debut in 2022, he’s established himself as one of the game’s best pitchers, signing a deal with Nike and a one-year, $4.3 million contract to avoid arbitration with the Mariners in January.

Now, he’s paying it forward by giving the current generation of Garnets shoes of their own.

“Two years ago now, I signed a new contract for Nike. I wanted to have a merchandise account that allowed me to give back,” Kirby said. “I had the idea in my head for a while, and it was the perfect opportunity. So, I reached out to Bruno and said, ‘I’d like to give you guys some gear for the season,’ and we went from there.”

Before the spring season started, Bruno surprised the team with new Nike cleats — both metal and turfs — and Nike baseball bags, all courtesy of Kirby’s generous donation.

“He wanted to try and help the program out,” Bruno said. “He’s been out of it going on 10 years, but he’s always been a real supporter of the Rye baseball program and wanted to do something nice for the team.”

Jon Hamm pictured filming “Your Friends & Neighbors” in downtown Rye last April.

“Your Friends & Neighbors,” the Apple TV+ series starring Jon Hamm, Amanda Peet, and Olivia Munn, will return to Rye next week to film an episode for its second season.

The cast and crew plan to visit the Central Business District on April 23 to film at Ruby’s Oyster Bar & Bistro at noon and then at Aurora, an Italian restaurant, at 3 p.m., according to an email obtained by The Record. Filming is only expected to impede traffic intermittently during the scenes at Aurora, according to the email.

It is unclear whether Hamm will be present, but the email mentions a “high-profile actress” who will be walking down the sidewalk at some point during filming.

Of 130 slaves in Rye, 68 were owned by just six families, including the Jay family, which included the nation’s first Supreme Court Justice John Jay.

LOCAL HISTORY

There were no cotton fields or sprawling plantations worked by the enslaved here in Rye. But there was a time, in the late 18th and early 19th century, when Westchester County was largely agricultural — and, as in the American South, that agriculture was enabled by the institution of slavery.

One of the towns with a high percentage of the enslaved and households owning them was Rye. Put another way, there was slavery in my neighborhood, indeed on the very land on which my own small house now stands.

The Rye's boys tennis team defeated Mamaroneck 6-1 on April 9.

SPORTS

The young Rye boys tennis team is getting its feet wet in more ways than one. The Garnets, who have just three upperclassmen on the varsity roster, were in the process of playing a third match in three days on April 10 before rain cut the competition short.

The team entered spring break with two wins, one loss, and a postponement against Horace Greeley, which is scheduled to be completed May 5. Rye lost to Scarsdale 6-1 on April 8, then quickly bounced back for a 6-1 win over Mamaroneck on April 9.

“I’m really enjoying this group of players,” said Rye coach Sue Dickson.
