On The Record: Rye Boys March Toward Championship
Garnet hoopers bounce No. 2 seed Yorktown
Good morning subscribers. ☕This is your Wednesday, March 5, Rye Record newsletter, curating some of the latest headlines across the city of Rye.
Today’s Weather Channel local forecast calls for a high of 54 degrees and rain. 🌧 Check out the forecast for the rest of the week here.
Locked in. Yorktown the No. 2 seed. Rye the No. 3 seed.
The matchup that had to be.
Two heavyweight prize fighters traded punches and body blows, looking for that elusive knockout punch – which never came. Had this contest gone one more round, who knows what the outcome might have been?
This time, the Rye boys prevailed 43-41 over Yorktown, earning the right to play in the Sectional championship. The Garnets (17-6) are now one win away from the New York State tournament, with a title matchup set for 5 p.m. Saturday against the winner of top-seeded Tappan Zee (19-2) or No. 4 Peekskill (15-6).
“It was really a shame that one team had to lose this one,” said Rye coach Tom Proudian. “Two good teams, both refusing to give up. I guess we made just one more bucket than they did. And so, we move on.”
With the score knotted at a barely imaginable 6-6 at the end of the first quarter, spectators at Westchester County Center knew this game – though not pretty – would likely come down to the last possession.

Rye wasn’t immediately on the radar of Kelly Mitten Waring and husband, Toby Waring, when they were looking to leave New York City.
Raised in Ridgefield, Conn., the couple first looked to the Nutmeg State, renting an apartment in Stamford.
When that commute proved too much, they started thinking lower Westchester.
“We visited various towns and ended up in Rye, looking at the Edith Read Sanctuary and the Marshlands Conservancy, and we thought, what’s not to love about Rye?” said Kelly, 32. “With its quaint downtown and beautiful waterfront, it hit all the marks for us.”

On a cold, Sunday afternoon in Brewster, the Rye Garnets dominated their old nemesis, the Pelham Pelicans, to capture the Section 1 Division 2 championship, 6-0.
“Pure joy. Elation. That’s what I’m feeling for these boys right now,” said coach Peter Thomas right after the game. “After the Byram Hills game the other day, I saw how focused these boys were on this game.
“There was no way they were going to let it end any other way.”

POLICE & FIRE
A Bronx man with a lengthy rap sheet was arrested for the eighth time Tuesday after police stopped him on I-95 in Rye and discovered he was driving with an allegedly stolen license plate, authorities said.
Roberto Robles, 26, was pulled over by Rye police after being alerted by the Westchester County Real Time Crime Center, whose surveillance cameras identified a stolen New York state license plate on the 2005 Honda Civic he was driving.
Robles’ run-ins with the law appear to have started in 2015 and led to numerous arrests in various communities across Westchester.

Phil Lesh loved Port Chester, and Port Chester loved him back.
Lesh, who died last October, visited the village more than 100 times to perform at The Capitol Theatre — first with the Grateful Dead and later leading a rotating cast of all-star musicians.
But the relationship between Port Chester and the legendary jam band bassist runs deeper.
