Suspect connected to numerous run-ins with police

Good morning subscribers. ☕This is your Wednesday, March 26, Rye Record newsletter, curating some of the latest headlines across the city of Rye.

Today’s Weather Channel local forecast calls for a high of 48 degrees and sunny skies☀️ Check out the forecast for the rest of the week here.

The end of the road. Antonio Trusty, 36, was driving a stolen vehicle with Massachusetts license plates when he allegedly evaded attempted traffic stops by Westchester County police in Yonkers on Sunday, setting off a wild made-for-TV chase.

Police said Trusty, of New York City, drove off the road onto the yards of Rye homes in Milton Point and The American Yacht Club, while being pursued by county and Rye police, in a stolen 2011 Toyota Highlander. Authorities said he also hit a Westchester County police car and a vehicle owned by a Connecticut resident while driving on Stuyvesant Avenue.

After allegedly driving on private properties and striking the police and the Connecticut car, Trusty smashed head-on into a tree on Stuyvesant Avenue at Barron Place. He was arrested after a brief pursuit on foot.

But the story doesn’t stop there.

The arrest marks at least the 14th time Trusty has been placed in handcuffs dating back to 2010. For more than a decade he has been connected to numerous crimes across Connecticut, including in Stamford, Bridgeport, Milford, Norwalk, and Waterbury, court records show.

Trusty served minor stints in jail for his offenses, according to court records, which ranged from car theft and assault to drug possession and resisting arrest. But he was also shown leniency by the courts, on several occasions, with judges favoring probation over prison sentences, records show.

His most recent run-in with police came in December 2023, when he allegedly assaulted his girlfriend in a car in Westport, Conn., and then prevented her from calling the police.

He was scheduled to appear in court later this month to face charges on three felonies and four misdemeanors linked to that case.

Antonio Trusty is listed as living in New York City, but he is mostly known in Connecticut where he has been arrested more than a dozen times.

SCHOOLS

Patricia Murray, who joined the Rye school district in 2021, will take on her new role as schools superintendent beginning in July.

After a months-long search, the Rye City Board of Education has settled on a familiar face for its next superintendent.

The board announced Tuesday night that it had unanimously appointed Patricia Murray, the school district’s current assistant superintendent for curriculum, instruction and assessment, as its new superintendent of schools.

Murray, who beat out 57 other candidates and five other finalists, will take on the role in July following Superintendent Eric Byrne’s looming retirement. Her term will run until June 2028.

In June 2024, the Rye boys lacrosse team lost 9-8 in overtime of the Class C state semifinals against eventual state champion Bayport-Blue Point High School of Long Island. Rye coach Steve Lennon remembers that game well.

“We talk about it, but we don’t dwell on it,” said the Garnets’ eighth-year coach. “That game was as close as a high school lacrosse game can get. With so many of our guys back from that team, I don’t have to say much. These kids know how they want this season to end.”

It was the fifth straight season Rye reached the state semifinals before being eliminated by a team from Long Island. Lennon believes this 2025 group has what it takes to get over the Long Island hump and reach the program’s first state championship game.
