On The Record: Garnets get the YouTube treatment

Marquee football program featured in doc

Good morning subscribers. ☕ This is your Tuesday, July 30, Rye Record newsletter, curating some of the latest headlines across the city of Rye.

That “G” doesn’t stand for Georgia! You know your high school football program has officially arrived when it has its own feature-length documentary.

This is the real deal. Unlike “BS High,” the HBO doc about a fake high school whose football team found its way onto the field in an ESPN-televised game, “Garnet Pride, A Story of Legacy and Football” is all about winning — chronicling the 2023 Rye Garnets’ historic chase to a state championship.

Filmmaker Ian Colalucci, 22, was there to capture all of it — from sweltering summer practices and a catastrophic 0-2 start to an epic rebound and eventual run to glory in the majestic Carrier Dome.

The Garnets, one of Westchester’s storied high school football programs, are immersed in the local lore of the Rye community and the film — available on YouTube — accurately depicts that small town connectivity.

Check it out. Some would say it’s a score. 🏈

SPORTS

The Rye Garnets during a 2023 game. The documentary captured up close and personal scenes of the team’s championship run.

“Garnet Pride, A Story of Legacy and Football,” is an hour-and-a-half-long documentary that begins the team’s 2023 odyssey with a practice at Nugent Stadium in the sweltering heat of late summer last year. Motivated by a loss the year before to rival Harrison, Coach Dino Garr’s team wants to turn the tables on the Huskies in the new season’s first game.

That’s only the first of many things that don’t go as planned for the Garnets at the outset. Not long after losing to Harrison for a second straight year, the boys from Rye face Pleasantville, the reigning Section 1 Class B champ — and lose that one, too.

REAL ESTATE

Built in 1915, 145 Milton Road is emblematic of the homes built by many wealthy New Yorkers of the time.

Driving along Milton Road one could easily overlook the grand mansion that sits on a little more than two acres nestled behind an unassuming red brick wall.

The house, built by renowned architect David Adler, whose portfolio of magnificent homes was well-known in the Midwest, is one of the few that he built on the East Coast.

Known for Adler’s signature grandiose European influence, the home sat untouched for years, with sprawling formal gardens and ornate detailing.

Having already swum around Manhattan, Jake Dolce braved frigid waters in crossing the English Channel on June 12.

PEOPLE

At 2 a.m. on June 12, Jake Dolce secured his swim cap, goggles, and ear plugs, tucked a pair of rosary beads into the side of his Speedo, and slipped into the murky 57-degree water.

Darkness obscured the white Cliffs of Dover hovering above him, but his sole focus was on the shores of Calais, France, some 21 miles across The English Channel as he began his long-planned swim across the famed and challenging waterway.
