On The Record: 105 years means a lot of hot dogs

Walter's celebrates its iconic Sound Shore status

Good morning subscribers. ☕ This is your Tuesday, Aug. 20, Rye Record newsletter, curating some of the latest headlines across the city of Rye.

That’s a lot of dogs! One study suggests that eating one hot dog can take as much as 35 minutes off your life. Then again, who’s counting, right?

If you’re willing to brave the risk, Walter’s, the Sound Shore’s hot dog king, is the place to be this weekend. The Mamaroneck landmark is celebrating its 105th anniversary. That’s more than a century, folks.

The two-day celebration includes things like arts and crafts, games, face painting and a photo booth. OK, I’m not that impressed.

Well, here’s where it gets good. They’ll be selling hot dogs for just $1.05 to toast the milestone — they normally $3.20 a pop. That’s a steal!

And Walter’s is also brining back its famous hot dog eating contest. A fan favorite, the event will crown the new Joey Chestnut of the Sound Shore. Isn’t your mouth watering just thinking about it?

Come one, come all. Join in the celebration and chow down.

Not so smart. Police arrested a 15-year-old boy for calling the Rye YMCA on Aug. 7 and threatening to shoot everyone. He made the call from his cell phone, police said.

BUSINESS

Walter’s Hot Dogs in Mamaroneck is celebrating 105 years in business with planned festivities Aug. 25-26.

Sound Shore staple Walter’s Hot Dogs is turning 105 this year, and the Mamaroneck landmark is planning to mark the milestone with two days of festivities – including the return of its hot dog eating contest.

The two-day celebration kicks off on Sunday, Aug. 25, at the Mamaroneck location, 937 Palmer Ave., with Family Fun Day, including complimentary arts and crafts, games, a balloonist, face painting, a photo booth, and more.

And of course, they will be selling hot dogs.

The entertainment wouldn’t be complete, however, without the return of Walter’s hot dog eating contest. The contest is a highly anticipated part of each anniversary celebration — the last having taken place in 2019 — so the competition is back to crown the new Joey Chestnut of the Sound Shore.

Scarsdale and Rye, two of Westchester’s toniest towns, are heading a new list of the wealthiest communities across the U.S.

Beating out more than a dozen of California's priciest ZIP codes, the posh Westchester towns with their high-performing schools, small town feel, and proximity to The Big Apple, make it a can't miss place to raise a family, realtors told The Record.

"No, it doesn't come as a surprise to me," said Fiona Dogan, a Rye-based realtor with Julia B. Fee Sothebys.

Andrew Hara was named the new principal of Rye High School. Hara replaces Suzanne Short who resigned in late June.

The Rye City School District has tapped Andrew Hara, the principal of the Barack Obama School for Social Justice in Yonkers, to lead its high school.

The appointment was announced in a Monday letter by Schools Superintendent Eric Byrne. Hara’s contract was approved by the city Board of Education in a special meeting that morning.

Rye will pay its new high school head a salary of $210,000, a significant jump from the $160,000 he was making in Yonkers, according to state and school district filings.

A 5-year-old boy who was rushed to the hospital after having what was reported as a medical episode while in the Playland Pool, has died.

The Bronx child, who was at Playland with his family, appeared to have suffered a seizure in the amusement park’s pool area during the afternoon on Aug. 1 and was taken to Greenwich Hospital in Connecticut, according to Westchester County police.

He was later transferred to Westchester Medical Center but died Monday, Aug. 5 from asphyxiation due to drowning, according to media reports. The name of the family has not been released.

Westchester County deferred all questions Tuesday to Playland’s operator, Standard Amusements.

Oakland, Playland, and Coveleigh Club beaches were allowed to resume operations — following the latest round of water testing — after being shut down by the Westchester County Health Department indefinitely.

Health officials had closed 17 beaches across Westchester by Aug. 9 as torrential rains dumped several inches of rain on the Sound Shore elevating bacteria counts to concerning levels for swimming.
