On The Record: Latimer wins

George Latimer addresses supporters in White Plains Tuesday night. The Westchester County executive declared victory after the Associated Press called the race at 9:38 p.m.

George Latimer won the highly charged NY-16 Congressional District primary race on Tuesday night, defeating incumbent Jamaal Bowman by a wide margin.

The Associated Press called the race at 9:38 p.m. with Latimer ahead by 10 points. By midnight, the Democratic establishment candidate had strengthened his lead over Bowman to 17 points with 88 percent of the votes counted — unseating the progressive in his bid for a third term in Congress.

The landslide loss for Bowman was a stunning rebuke by Westchester voters.

“What we see tonight is the many of Westchester and the Bronx,” Latimer told a crowd of supporters in White Plains after declaring victory. “Tonight, we turn the page.”
